eFiberSat PowerPoint Video – Transcript
In this video, we will introduce and give an overview of the Optical Zonu eFiberSat turnkey solution. The eFiberSat solution consists of three components; a rack mounted indoor unit, an environmentally hardened outdoor unit, and a single mode fiber cable to connect the two. The indoor unit has eight RF connectors which will accommodate a combination of up to four uplinks and/or downlinks plus two independent low phase noise reference clocks. All signals are multiplexed onto a single single mode fiber. Status and control via SNMP (v2 or v3), web user interface, and/or Optical Zonu’s J-Control graphical user interface (GUI) for the indoor unit and the outdoor unit are accessed via RJ45 Ethernet connectors. The system can also accommodate an optical Gigabit Ethernet data link between the indoor unit and outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is an environmentally hardened IP67 metal enclosure. The weatherized enclosure has four RF connectors that can accommodate up to four uplinks and/or downlinks. A single fiber connects the outdoor unit to the indoor unit. The outdoor unit is powered from 12VDC and there are status LEDs for each of the RF ports.
The RF specifications of the 3 GHz uplink and downlink are shown in the table here. Spur free dynamic range (SFDR) of 109-110 dB/Hz2/3 are typical. eFiberSat also provides the option for up to 6 GHz uplinks and downlinks. Some satcom modems provide reference clocks on separate RF connectors and eFiberSat can transport these. For those satcom modems that multiplex together both a modulated uplink/downlink signal and a reference clock, the eFiberSat indoor unit demultiplexes or separates the modulated signal from the reference clock for separate transport to the outdoor unit over fiber. In this way, intermodulation distortion between the RF signal and the reference clock is eliminated. Also, when separated from the RF signal, the reference clock can be transported at a higher RF power level to maintain low phase noise performance. Reference clocks may range in frequency from 10 MHz to 200 MHz and the indoor unit can accept and distribute two separate input reference clocks.
As noted previously, eFiberSat is highly configurable with respect to the combination of uplink and downlink signal transport. For the case where the satcom modem outputs a reference clock on a separate connector, eFiberSat transports that on a separate wavelength to the outdoor unit where it is distributed to any combination of LNBs (low noise block downconverter) and/or BUCs (block up converter). In the case where the satcom modem multiplexes together a modulated RF signal and a reference clock, the indoor unit demultiplexes or separates the two, sends the reference clock to the outdoor unit (at the antenna) on a separate wavelength, and distributes to any combination of LNBs and/or BUCs. The outdoor unit may also output a low phase noise reference clock on a separate RF connector.
eFiberSat supports applications such as VSAT, TVRO, shipboard RF transport, oil/gas platforms, mines/tunnels, etc. The operating temperature range is -20C to +60C, with an optional upper operating temperature of +75C. The outdoor unit may supply an optional +12 VDC bias to the LNBs/BUCs. The outdoor unit may supply optional control biasing to the LNBs such as +13V, +18V, with and without the 22 kHz tone. The eFiberSat subsystem may also incorporate Optical Zonu’s patented micro-OTDR technology which when used with Gigabit Ethernet data transport can isolate breaks or faults in the fiber.
To summarize, eFiberSat is a turnkey solution for antenna remoting, 100 meters and beyond to the 10s of kilometers. eFiberSat is a solution where no electromagnetic radiation can be tolerated from the transport media (i.e., copper). eFiberSat is a solution for transporting up to 6 GHz uplinks and/or downlinks with high signal fidelity (SFDR). 10 MHz to 200 MHz reference clocks are transported on separate wavelengths to maintain low phase noise and intermodulation distortion performance. The eFiberSat outdoor unit is an IP67 environmentally hardened enclosure. LNB biasing is available on all outdoor unit connectors at the antenna. All equipment may be monitored via SNMP (v2 or v3), web user interface, and/or Optical Zonu’s J-Control graphical user interface (GUI). For more information, please visit https://www.opticalzonu.com.
