OZC Micro-OTDR SFP Supports Argus Hand Held Tester

OZC Micro-OTDR SFP Supports Argus Hand Held Tester Home / Modules / Small Modules / OZ200 Overview: Argus (Intec) designs and manufactures a high-performance portable network tester product line, which can include a full feature OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer). But not all Fiber Techs in the field need a full feature OTDR. So, Argus was looking for a more cost-effective way to implement an optical fiber fault detector into their hand-held tester. The Micro-OTDR SFP from OZC fills this need, and has been integrated into the 100, 200 and 300 series testers by Argus. “In real life the OFF (Optical Fault Finder) is a standard SFP transceiver for data communication. Ok, a quite special one, since working on ONE fiber using ONE single wavelength, but we also could use it in our tester as a standard transceiver with DDM support….” – Ralf-Dieter Heil, International Sales Manager, Argus(intec Gesellschaft für Informationstechnik mbH) Challenges: Cost – low enough to make practical for a hand-held tester. Size – small enough to fit into a portable hand-held tester. Performance – able to operate in typical telecom network environments. Solution: Unlike full feature OTDRs, Micro-OTDR SFPs are designed to be compatible with high unit

Optical Zonu Fiber Transport for Public Safety Connectivity Deployed at a Major Data Center

Optical Zonu Fiber Transport for Public Safety Connectivity Deployed at a Major Data Center Home / Modules / Small Modules / OZ200 Overview: This data center is currently undergoing a major expansion. The current facility consists of two 450,000 sq ft buildings. An additional 1.5M sq ft is currently under construction.  As part of ensuring code compliance, the company has contracted one of Optical Zonu’s Engineering Services partners to deploy a distributed antenna System (DAS) to provide public safety wireless coverage throughout each building. Challenges: Some of the services originate in one building while the other service sources are in the other building, but all services must be connected the DAS in both buildings Solution: This was accomplished easily using Optical Zonu’s ZONUConnect RF over Fiber Transport. The compact, rack-mounted link provides a cross-connect for each of the needed public safety wireless services between the two buildings. The ZONUConnect solution has the high reliability required and is NEBS certified. Each link includes an Ethernet data connection over the same fiber so every component can be remotely monitored in compliance with NFPA codes. Have A Similar Challenge? Micro-OTDR at the Maryland Research Education Network (MDREN)

Micro-OTDR at the Maryland Research Education Network (MDREN) Home / Modules / Small Modules / OZ200 Overview: The Maryland Research and Education Network (MDREN), provides advanced network services to institutions throughout the State of Maryland and connections to regional and national resources. MDREN consists of a network that connects University System of Maryland members, other Maryland state universities, community colleges, and private institutions to each other, the Internet, and Internet2, as well as access to teleconferencing and distance learning facilities, over facilities ranging from 1.5Mbps to 10 Gigabit Ethernet using MDREN’s own fiber core infrastructure. “…Then we discovered the Micro-OTDR approach. With our own expertise, and support from OZC, we were able to design the Micro-OTDR into our existing network.” Challenges: Maintain the extreme performance and reliability required of a Research/Education network. Eliminate the cost of the detection time component of the MTTR from a network fault. Stay within the CAPEX budget of the university while meeting network service and monitoring goals. Realize true OPEX savings by sending the right repair techs, to the right place, without delay. Solution: “Facing the need to replace and upgrade our network infrastructure over the course of the next several years, we wanted to

Zonu SkyShot Supports United States Treasury Minting and Engraving Building

Zonu SkyShot Supports United States Treasury Minting and Engraving Building Home / Modules / Small Modules / OZ200 Overview: A RF over Fiber GPS solution started to experience intermittent connection issues, and eventually service stopped. A means of determining the point of failure was needed and fortunately we had a ZonuSkyshot on hand to help us. The speed of use, and access helped cut down on the diagnostic time, and helped identify the point of failure in a matter of minutes. Challenges: Determining the point of the timing failure Access in a secure facility Solution: The ZonuSkyshot was effectively taken to three different points of the installation, and it’s use allowed us to isolate and identify the point of failure. It virtually eliminated the guess work, and saved the cost and expenses of completely “ripping and replacing” the installation. Within minutes at each connection point we were able to identify the satellite “visibility” and capture screen shots for points of reference. It is an efficient, and effective means of determining GPS performance. Have A Similar Challenge? Contact Our Sales Manager: Paul M. CWDM over Leased Fiber

CWDM over Leased Fiber Home / Modules / Small Modules / OZ200 Overview: In most situations, an end user of a fiber optic solution, also owns the physical fiber. For example, fiber is installed specifically to connect a remote antenna to a control room or distribute signals from roof antennas through a building or tunnel system. In some cases, however, fiber must be leased from a third party to connect, for example, different laboratories in different building across a city. In such applications it is not practical for an end customer to install fiber. Leased fiber can be expensive, therefore one is motivated to lease the least number of fibers as possible. Challenges: End customer may not own the fiber required to connect distant sites. Leased fiber may be expensive and it is a recurring cost. It is desired to minimize the number of fibers required to connect fiber optic equipment. Solution: Clever use of CWDM can minimize the number of fibers required for RF signal transport between sites. In the example shown below, 8 RF signals (4 in each direction) are required to be transported between distant buildings. It is straightforward to multiplex 8 wavelengths onto a single leased

VNA Measurements for Terahertz Wireless Systems

VNA Measurements for Terahertz Wireless Systems Home / Modules / Small Modules / OZ200 Overview: As demands for wireless data increase exponentially, the Terahertz (THz) band has become a target for future allocation for system architectures that will have data throughput on the order of Tbps. To assess performance of THz transmitted and received signals covering distances on the order of 5-10m, vector network analyzers (VNA) are normally used with probes running to the transmitter and receive frequency extenders. Transporting VNA frequencies up to 40 GHz is prohibitive over copper coaxial cabling for longer distance because of extensive losses. Active fiberoptics can transport the 40 GHz RF signals over much longer distances, from 100s of meters to even 10s of kilometers if necessary. “Our group conducted the first long-distance double-directional THz channel measurements, however, our experience made it clear that we should switch to integrated RFoF for higher performance. After considering a number of RFoF products, we selected OZ based on their lower NF and amplifier customizations. We have had a very positive experience with their products, which we have extensively used for our channel measurements. Apart from the products, the team at OZ is quite competent and they have

W3 Holdings ITA – Micro-OTDR SFP

W3 Holdings ITA – Micro-OTDR SFP Home / Modules / Small Modules / OZ200 Overview: W3 Holdings ITA is an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in the heart of the Amazon region of Brazil with unique network challenges. Not only did they need to provision and run a local access distribution network, but they have to monitor and maintain several long-haul spans, some up to 120 Km in length, in the most remote region of the country. “Though we are a smaller ISP, we still need to maintain a highly reliable network, especially for our longest optical fiber cable spans. The Micro-OTDR SFPs… eliminate the detection time component of the cost of the mean-time-to-recovery (MTTR) from an optical network fault, resulting in considerable OPEX savings for our W3 Mega service.” Network Architect, Jone Zanuzo Challenges: • Maintain competitive SLAs for expansive network infrastructure in remote Amazon region.• Eliminate the cost of the detection time component of network MTTR.• Stay within the CAPEX budget while meeting network monitoring requirements.• Realize true OPEX savings by sending the right repair techs, to the right place, without delay. Solution: “To support our stringent service level agreements (SLAs), we need to monitor our optical fiber links
